Bloodlines
My approach
to the theme of this exhibition was with a sense of absence.
The absence
of any known bloodline, and how this may affect the individual.
If all that
you have as an indicator of your bloodline is what you see when you look in the
mirror, your skin and eye colour, the colour and texture of your hair, the
shape and contours of your face and body would you experience a sense of loss
or a sense of freedom?
As part of
my contribution to the exhibition I have chosen two vintage christening robes
as my ‘ground’ for the textile works on this theme.
Christenings
being one of the rituals that many people experience, one of the first
‘families’ they are welcomed and accepted into, a spiritual bloodline, and
clothing being a way that we express ourselves and gain a sense of identity or
‘tribe’.
For many
who have never known their bloodline the search can underpin their entire life,
becoming the force that drives them forward and bring about an ambition to
create their own bloodline with children of their own.
Or perhaps
the freedom of not knowing is greater and with that absence of knowledge all
paths are open and everything is permitted.
